First snowfall in Czech mountains

The first snow after the summer was falling in the Czech Republic’s highest mountain range, Krkonose (Giant Mountains), on Friday.”The temperature was some 0.5 degrees Centigrade below zero on Friday evening and in the night. Since then it has warmed up and the snow is disappearing here and there. Last year the first snow and frosts were registered in mid-September already. In 2007 it was snowing as early as September 4th.

Helmets?

I know, i know this ain’t exactly an exciting subject, but one that has been getting a lot of press… Gone are the days when wearing a helmet was viewed as being something for people with no nuts. After several fatalities involving skiers/boarders that were not wearing helmets, people have started taking note. Some countries are discussing making them mandatory; Austria has introduced a law requiring kids under 14 to wear helmets. Sales of helmets in Germany have doubled since a skiing accident in the Austrian resort of Styria in January which left one woman dead and German politician Dieter Althaus seriously injured, his life believed to be saved as he wore a helmet. Research suggests that wearing a helmet cuts minor injuries by 30-50% and that it does not necessarily reduce fatalities; others disagree.

To us it seems only logical to protect those last few brain cells we haven’t destroyed during apres ski… : )

Anyway, when i think about it i only started wearing a helmet last season and it makes me shudder to think of the mad shit i used to do and luckily get away with during my 20′s! Problem is you think you’re invincible. I remember seeing a teenager get air lifted out of a terrain park who’d landed on his head and didn’t live to tell the tale…. Since then i always wear my lid!

The European summer skiing season is still going strong, with pistes open in all of our reported countries. The weather is forecast to be predominantly bright and sunny this weekend, while the temperatures on the glacier ski areas will remain low helping to preserve the snow cover.

If you want to rip this season you need to already get in the gym before it’s too late : ) Two words; Circuit training. It’s the best way to hit all muscle groups whilst also training cardio fitness. This military workout is awesome for skiers and boarders:
